Course Overview
This counselling course (UK) will cover key elements of psychodynamic, person-centred and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). The course will also increase your learners’ knowledge of diversity and ethics and how to identify an ethical framework.
Learners will gain the ability to work autonomously and complete further reading and research tasks by completing this counselling course. UK counselling career pathways can be successfully started by completing this qualification.
Please note:
- If you choose to study the fully paper-based course, you will need to have an appropriate witness available to complete a witness statement for you as part of the Unit 4 assessment
- If you choose to study the paper-based course with online assessments, you will need to either film yourself demonstrating particular skills, or have an appropriate witness available to complete a witness statement for you as part of the Unit 4 assessment.
*The witness must hold a qualification in counselling skills and The Skills Network may contact the witness to validate their qualifications and experience.
*Please note that this course is not accredited by BACP and so some further education providers will not accept this course as a precursor to the level 3.

Unit 1: Using counselling skills
In this unit, your learners will identify core counselling skills and understand how these are practised in a counselling relationship. Learners will gain an understanding of how to establish a helping relationship and will consider the boundaries which need to be taken into account.
Unit 2: Introduction to counselling skills theories
This unit introduces your learners to the key elements of the main theoretical approaches to counselling, including psychodynamic, person-centred and CBT. Learners will discover the key differences between these theories and gain an understanding of the significance of counselling theory.
Unit 3: Diversity and ethics in the use of counselling skills
This unit covers the concepts of diversity and ethics. Your learners will gain an understanding of anti-discriminatory practice, discover the key aspects of an ethical framework and discover varied ways to address diversity in counselling skills practice.
Unit 4: Counselling skills and personal development
This unit allows your learners to develop self-understanding – identifying their own values and beliefs and reflecting on their personal qualities and skills. Your learners will also identify where they would like to develop in the future and potential sources of support.
