To help address these challenges, The Skills Network has developed an online learning resource aligned to Unit 202: Principles of Electrical Science within the City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations (Buildings and Structures) (2365-02), mapped to Unit ELEC2/08: Electrical Science and Principles within the EAL Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installation (600/6724/X).

Developed in partnership with Leeds College of Building, the programme provides learners with access to structured online learning that can be integrated into a college’s existing delivery model.

In response to these challenges, The Skills Network has developed an online learning resource aligned to qualification specifications.

It provides learners with structured, high-quality online learning that supports the delivery of essential Electrical Science knowledge within broader technical and vocational courses.

This underpinning knowledge – including mathematical principles, electrical theory and fundamental concepts – is critical to learner progression but can be difficult to deliver consistently where staffing and capacity are constrained.

By providing a standardised learning experience, the resource helps colleges maintain quality while adapting delivery to suit their curriculum model.

What Electrical Science knowledge is covered?

This resource covers the core knowledge that underpins a wide range of technical and vocational programmes.

  • Mathematical principles used in electrical work, such as algebra, trigonometry and calculations 
  • Units of measurement and electrical quantities, including current, voltage, resistance and power 
  • Fundamental mechanical principles, such as force, energy and efficiency 
  • Core electrical theory, including circuits, resistance, voltage and current relationships 
  • Magnetism and the principles of AC generation 
  • Electronic components and their application within electrical systems 

This supports learner progression into electrical installation, maintenance and related technical roles.

Alongside Electrical Science, we are developing Health and Safety in Building Services Engineering to support technical training programmes. This forthcoming resource covers key legislation, risk assessment and safe working practices, helping providers deliver compliant, structured content that prepares learners to work safely and effectively in real building services environments.
