Shaping the future of learning for 16-19-year-olds

Liam Sammon, Executive Director of Education Services and Innovation at The Skills Network, discusses how the online training provider is working closely with further education establishments to equip 16-19-year-old students with the skills needed for the next step in their career.

“There’s no denying that the challenges young people face today have evolved substantially. The digital landscape, changing job market and other societal pressures mean that now more than ever, young people need support and guidance across a wealth of topics including mental health, staying safe online and employability skills.

“This is all whilst educators providing the support contend with heavy workloads, increasing demands and pressures within their roles. The recent popularity of the Netflix programme, Adolescence, gave an insight, albeit fictional, into the challenges that many young people face today in the age of online media.

“The programme has helped bring some of the issues covered, such as mental health and online conflicts, to the top of the news agenda and has highlighted the crucial need to provide the right tools and education for young people. In our role as an online training provider that works closely with FE colleges, we offer a wide range of short courses that support students throughout their time in education, helping them build the skills and resilience they need to thrive now and in the future.

“Adolescence opened up many conversations within both mainstream media and wider society, highlighting the generational shifts shaping how young people see the world. In response, we’ve developed a timely suite of short courses that support educators in adapting their 16-19 curriculum to better contend with those challenges

“This includes resources such as the Positive Utilisation of Social Media, Staying Safe Online and Recognising Online Propaganda, all aimed at equipping young people with the essential skills needed in today’s digital landscape. Additionally, resources such as Creating Strong Relationships Through Talk, Peer-to-Peer Abuse and The Social and Personal Effects of Mental Ill Health provide practical skills and context for students.

The power of online learning is that we’re able to adapt to real world happenings quickly and efficiently for FE partners. Modules delivered online allow students to study as and when works for them in any location whether this be in a classroom setting or at home.

The landscape is always changing and right now the demand for digital literacy and problem-solving skills has never been greater. Those currently in the education system need to be able to adapt to changes quickly to equip themselves with the soft skills required to have a successful and flourishing future beyond the classroom.
