5 top tips to help prevent Diabetes Type 2

Type 2 Diabetes is far more common than type 1 Diabetes, which is often related to a past history health issues. In the UK, about 90% of all adults with diabetes have type 2.
With type 2 diabetes, the illness and symptoms develop gradually (over weeks or months). It occurs when the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin to maintain a normal blood sugar level, or the body is unable to use the insulin that is produced.
The risk of type 2 diabetes increases with age, which may be because people tend to gain weight and exercise less as they grow older. However, taking the right precautions and making sure you follow the right advice; your risk of developing type 2 diabetes can be reduced significantly.
Although the condition is mostly developed by those over 40, it is still becoming increasingly common in younger people. Therefore, it is crucial that you are aware of the key things you can do to help prevent type 2 diabetes.
Top 5 tips
- Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight
- Be physically active - at least 30 minutes of regular, moderate, intensity activity on most days
- Eat a healthy diet of between three and five servings of fruit and vegetables a day and avoid takeaway and processed foods.
- Avoid tobacco use - smoking increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
- Limit your alcohol intake. too much alcohol can lead to weight gain and may increase your blood pressure and triglyceride levels
